Sgt. Felix Minn Furlonger
Army Service Corps
Service No: 3431

Born about January 1855 in Haslemere, Surrey, England.
Died 20 September, 1881 in Dublin Ireland.

The building to the right of the Swan Inn I believe to be the home of Walter Furlonger
and the birth place of Felix Minn Furlonger. It was from the bedroom window of this
home that Walter witnessed the murder of the local Police Inspector, William Donaldson,
on July 29th, 1855, only a few months after Felix was born.

Felix Minn Furlonger was born in Haslemere, Surrey, England the son of Walter and Jane Furlonger. The Furlongers were Farmers, Butchers and Businessmen. The 1871 census for Haslemere shows Felix aged 16 years, a butcher's assistant, living on High Street with his parents Walter and Jane.

Jane Flint, mother of Felix Minn Furlonger.
Born 8 April 1826 in Ewhurst, Surrey, England.

According to his Army Attestation Papers Felix, like his father, was a butcher. Upon enlistment on 9 January 1873 he was described as follows:

  • Apparent age - 18 years
  • Height - 5 feet 8 inches
  • Chest measurement - 35 inches
  • Complexion - Dark
  • Eyes - Hazel
  • Hair - Dark
  • Any distinctive marks - none
  • Religious denomination - Wesleyan 18-11-78, originally Church of England

His service records show his progress in the Army:

In the Company Defaulter's Book Felix is recorded as having been admonished four times in his career for neglect of duty i.e. being absent without permission. Three times while at Aldershot and once in Dublin.

His Military History Sheet shows length of service as 8 years 253 days. Certificate of Education - Third class on 3 Sept 1876. Also that he married Mary Cooper at the Dublin Registry Office on 15 March 1880 and died in Dublin on 20 September 1881. Cause of death not shown.

However, the marriage certicate shows that he was married in St. Thomas Church, Dublin and strangely shows his employment and address as something quite different from what it really was.

Felix Minn Furlonger died at 18 Bayview Avenue, Dublin
Ireland. It is the yellow house on the right.

19 Bayview is the brick house adjacent to it. Mary's sister,
Hannah, married the gentleman who lived therein and
was in attendance at the birth of Felix Jr. at 18 Bayview Ave.

Felix and Mary had two children, both born in Dublin. The first was a daughter, Amelia Florence Jane Furlonger born 21 August 1880 and the second a boy, Felix Ernest Walter Furlonger born 22 August 1881, just one month before Felix senior died. Felix junior said that his father died of Cholera during the epidemic which persisted in Dublin at that time. My mother always said that Felix' body was returned to England for burial but so far we have been unable to discover his burial place. Many victims of Cholera were quickly buried in common graves in an attempt to control the disease from spreading. It is likely that Felix was buried this way in Dublin and if so we may never know where.

An email message received April 2019 showing the last resting place of Felix Minn Furlonger.
This contradicts what the family had believed to be the case and ends a long quest for this information.
